Introduction

Sariani Water Source Protection and Restoration Project

NOLORAMATA is a community-led non-governmental organization dedicated to restoring rangelands and strengthening sustainable natural resource management in Northern Loliondo, Ngorongoro District, Tanzania.
Between 2023 and 2025, NOLORAMATA partnered with local communities in Oloipiri, Orkuyene, Lopolun, Oloirien, and Oldonyowas villages to restore degraded rangelands that support both pastoral livelihoods and wildlife ecosystems.
The restoration approach combines Indigenous Maasai knowledge with sustainable land management practices, including selective bush thinning, temporary grazing exclusion, and controlled ecological burning. These interventions have improved pasture productivity, enhanced biodiversity, and strengthened ecosystem resilience.
Building on these achievements, NOLORAMATA has expanded its conservation efforts to include the protection and restoration of critical water sources that sustain communities, livestock, and wildlife throughout the year.

The Sariani Water Source Protection Project

The Sariani Water Source is one of the most important freshwater ecosystems in Northern Loliondo. It originates within Oloirien and Magaiduru villages and is fed by four seasonal streams flowing from Loliondo I Forest and the Sariani Community Forest.

These streams include:

  • Oljaluui
  • Olarani
  • Olaloi
  • Olemboke

Together, they converge to form the Sariani Spring, which supplies reliable water throughout the year.

For generations, this water source has supported domestic water needs, livestock production, and wildlife populations across the villages of Oloirien, Magaiduru, Mgongo, Mageri, and Samunge.

Its ecological and social importance makes it a critical resource for both local livelihoods and landscape conservation.

Why the Project Was Needed

Over recent years, increasing human activities—including agricultural expansion, uncontrolled grazing, deforestation, and unsustainable land use—have significantly reduced water flow and threatened the long-term sustainability of the Sariani Water Source.
Livestock crossing the spring from multiple directions has also contributed to soil erosion, trampling, and contamination of the water source.
Without immediate conservation measures, the ecological integrity of this important watershed was at serious risk.
Recognizing these challenges, NOLORAMATA worked closely with local communities to design and implement a collaborative restoration initiative that protects the water source while ensuring sustainable community access.

Restoration Activities

The project implemented several integrated conservation measures to restore and safeguard the Sariani Water Source.

Protective Fencing

Approximately four acres surrounding the spring were enclosed with protective fencing to prevent human disturbance and uncontrolled livestock access.

Sustainable Water Access

A water collection point was established approximately 100 metres from the spring, allowing community members to access clean water without disturbing the protected source.

Stream Rehabilitation

Fallen trees, logs, and debris obstructing the natural stream channels were carefully removed to improve water flow and protect the spring from sediment accumulation.

Habitat Conservation

Native vegetation and existing trees surrounding the water source were conserved to stabilize soils, improve groundwater recharge, and maintain healthy ecosystem functions.

Future Conservation Plan

To ensure the long-term sustainability of the Sariani Water Source, NOLORAMATA and the local communities have developed a comprehensive management plan.

The next phase includes:

  • Restoring all four feeder streams through indigenous tree planting and ecological rehabilitation.
  • Developing participatory land use plans that designate grazing areas, farmland, settlements, forests, and water protection zones.
  • Establishing and legally registering a community-based Water Source Management Committee with equal participation of women and men.
  • Deploying two community-supported guards to monitor and protect the water source from illegal activities and environmental degradation.
  • Establishing a community tree nursery to supply indigenous seedlings for future restoration efforts.
  • Developing and implementing community by-laws that strengthen local governance and long-term protection of the water source.
Challenges Encountered

Several challenges emerged during project implementation.

Flood Damage

Seasonal flooding damaged sections of the protective fence, displaced fence posts, and deposited sediment over parts of the spring.

Budget Constraints

Some essential materials and activities exceeded the original project budget, limiting implementation in certain areas.

Human and Livestock Encroachment

Occasional unauthorized access by people and livestock resulted in continued pressure on sections of the protected area.

Angata Keri Dam

The nearby Angata Keri Dam presents additional challenges for pastoral communities. Besides encouraging settlement closer to grazing lands, it has been associated with increased risks of Malignant Catarrhal Fever (MCF) in livestock and raises safety concerns for children herding animals near the dam.

Community Recommendations

Community members and technical experts proposed several actions to strengthen the long-term success of the project.

These include:

  • Installing stronger, flood-resistant fence posts along vulnerable sections of the Sariani stream.
  • Establishing a routine maintenance programme to ensure the protective infrastructure remains effective.
  • Creating an emergency contingency fund to respond quickly to unforeseen environmental or financial challenges.
  • Constructing a durable and erosion-resistant water collection point outside the protected enclosure to improve community access while safeguarding the spring.
Long-Term Impact

The Sariani Water Source Protection Project demonstrates how community leadership, Indigenous knowledge, and sustainable ecosystem restoration can work together to secure essential natural resources.

By protecting one of Northern Loliondo’s most valuable freshwater sources, the project strengthens water security, supports pastoral livelihoods, conserves biodiversity, and enhances climate resilience for present and future generations.
