A community born on the land it protects.
Maasai indigenous communities in the Eastern Great Serengeti ecosystem, Tanzania.
Background
Founded by Maasai communities. Rooted in Loliondo.
Northern Loliondo Rangeland Management (NOLORAMATA) is a community-based organization founded and registered by community members in Ngorongoro, across the Loliondo villages, with our main office in Wasso, Arusha, Tanzania.
We restore and care for the rangeland landscape of the Eastern Great Serengeti ecosystem — honoring the value of both livestock and wildlife, and supporting the Maasai pastoral indigenous people whose lives are inseparable from this land.
- Our strategic plan 2025-2030, with current projects reflect our Vision of making and starting with NorthernLoliondo and its surrounding landscape ecosystems resilient and sustainable.
- By 2030, we aim to improve the healthy grazing environment by restoring and using controlled fire on more than 15,000acres of land, which, over 15years ago,was a bushland with acacia trees thathave no value to either livestock or wildlife, in return, increasing the presence of savanna grassland.
- 14 villages will be under the programs of range land, starting with 5 villages currently.
- Land Use Planning for all 14 villages will be initiated.
- The economic and environmental resilience of the people and landscape needs to be improved, with local livelihoods enhanced and key wildlife populations, such as wildebeest, and breeding sites restored.
- Water bodies and water sources like rivers and small streams are improved for the benefit of both people, wildlife, and cattle.
- Ecotourism and other social enterprises have been established to diversify the economy.
