The Sariani Water Source Protection Project is a community-driven initiative dedicated to conserving and protect vital water sources to ensure sustainable access to clean and safe water.
Implemented by the Northern Loliondo Rangeland Management Area – Tanzania (NOLARAMATA) in close collaboration with local communities and key stakeholders the project is carried out in Oloirien and Magaiduru villages, Loliondo, Arusha Region, Tanzania.
The Sariani water source is located on the boundary between these two villages and serves as a critical resource for both communities. But too much mixed use for water collection, washing and watering livestock was degrading this sensitive area of springs.
The project focuses on restoring and safeguarding water catchment areas, preventing environmental degradation and promoting responsible water use through strong community participation and environmental stewardship. The different springs were protected with a fence, water from a critical spring is now collected in a basin, and transported out of the area where clean drinking water can be collected. The area for watering livestock has been moved 200 m downstream to be separated from collection of water for household use.
By protecting natural water sources the project enhances ecosystem health, strengthens climate resilience, supports sustainable livelihoods and contributes to improved public health and long-term water security for both people and nature.
